The Silver Linings Playbook Chapter 15

Sing and Spell and Chant I get up at 4:30 a.m. and start lifting so I will be done with my workout by kickoff, and when I finally come up from the basement, the house smells like crabby snacks, three-meats pizza, and buffalo wings. â€Å"Smells good,† I say to my mom while I put on my trash bag, and then I'm out the door for a ten-mile run. I am shocked to see that Tiffany is jogging up and down the block, because she did not run behind me yesterday, and also, I am running in the a.m., which is not my regular time to run. I jog toward Knight's Park, and when I look over my shoulder, I see she's following me again. â€Å"How did you know that I would be running early?† I say, but she keeps her head down and only follows silently. We run our ten miles, and when I return to my house, Tiffany runs on without saying anything, as if we had never even eaten raisin bran together at the diner and nothing has changed. I see my brother's silver BMW parked in front of my parents' house, so I sneak in the back door, run up the stairs, and jump into the shower. When I finish showering, I put on my Hank Baskett jersey – which my mother has laundered, getting the makeup off the numbers – and then follow the sound of the pregame show to the family room, ready to root on the Birds. My best friend, Ronnie, is seated next to my brother, which surprises me. Both of them are wearing green away jerseys with the number 18 and the name Stallworth on the back – Ronnie's is a cheap replica jersey with iron-on numbers, but Jake's is authentic. Dad is in his chair, wearing his number 5 McNabb replica jersey. When I say, â€Å"Go Birds!† my brother stands, turns to face me, puts both hands in the air, and says â€Å"Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh!† until Ronnie and my dad also stand, face me, raise their hands in the air, and say â€Å"Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!† When I raise my hands in the air and say â€Å"Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh!† all four of us do the chant, rapidly spelling the letters with our arms and bodies – â€Å"E!-A!-G!-L!-E!-S! EAGLES!† – shooting out two arms and a leg to make an E, touching our fingertips high above our heads to make an A, and so forth. When we finish, my brother makes his way around the couch, puts an arm around my shoulders, and starts to sing the fight song, which I remember and sing with him. â€Å"Fly, Eagles, fly! On the road to victory!† I'm so happy to be singing with my brother I do not even get mad at him for putting his arm around me. We walk around the couch as we sing, â€Å"Fight, Eagles, fight! Score a touchdown, one, two, three!† I look at my dad, and he does not look away, but only starts singing with more enthusiasm. Ronnie throws his arm around me, and then I am in between my brother and my best friend. â€Å"Hit 'em low. Hit 'em high. And watch our Eagles fly!† I see that my mom has come in to watch, and she has her hand over her mouth again like she does whenever she is about to laugh or cry – her eyes look happy, so I know she is laughing under her hands. â€Å"Fly, Eagles, fly! On the road to victory!† And then Ronnie and Jake remove their arms from my neck s o they can make the letters again with their bodies. â€Å"E!-A!-G!-L!-E!-S! EAGLES!† We're all red-faced, and my father is breathing heavy, but everyone is so happy, and for the first time I really feel like I am home. My mom sets up the food on TV trays, and the game begins. â€Å"I'm not supposed to drink,† I say when Mom distributes the bottles of Budweiser, but my father says, â€Å"You can drink beer during Eagles games.† Mom shrugs and smiles as she hands me a cold beer. I ask my brother and Ronnie why they aren't also wearing Baskett jerseys, since Baskett is the man, and they tell me the Eagles were able to trade for Donte Stallworth, and that Donte Stallworth is now the man. Because I am wearing my Baskett jersey, I insist that Baskett is the man, to which my father blows air through his teeth, and my cocky brother says, â€Å"We'll see soon,† which is a weird thing for him to say, considering he was the one who gave me the Baskett jersey in the first place and just two weeks ago assured me that Baskett was really the man. My mother watches the game nervously, like she always does, because she knows that if the Eagles lose, my father will be in a bad mood for an entire week and will yell at her a lot. Ronnie and Jake trade facts about different players and check the screens on their cell phones for updates on other games and players, because they both play fantasy football, which is a computer game that gives you points for picking players who score touchdowns and gain yardage. And I glance over at my father from time to time, making sure he sees me cheering, because I know he is only willing to sit in the same room with his mentally deranged son as long as I am rooting for the Birds with everything I got. I have to admit that it feels good to sit in the same room with my father, even though he hates me and I still have not forgiven him a hundred percent for kicking me in the attic and punching me in the face. The Houston Texans score first, and Dad starts cursing pretty loudly, so much that my mother leaves the room, saying she will bring us new beers, and Ronnie stares at the television, pretending he has not heard what my father has said, which is, â€Å"Play some fucking defense, you piece-of-shit overpaid secondary! This is the Texans, not the Dallas Cowgirls. The fucking Texans! Jesus fucking Christ!† â€Å"Relax, Dad,† Jake says. â€Å"We got this.† Mom distributes the beers, and Dad sips quietly for a while, but when McNabb throws an interception, my father starts pointing his finger at the television and cursing even louder, saying things about McNabb that would make my friend Danny go wild, because Danny says only black people can use the n-word. Luckily, Donte Stallworth is indeed the man, because when McNabb starts throwing to him, the Eagles build a lead and Dad stops cursing and starts to smile again. At halftime, Jake talks my dad into joining us outside for a catch, and then the four of us are throwing a football around on our street. One of our neighbors comes out with his son, and we let them join in. The kid is only maybe ten, and he cannot really reach us from his yard, but since he is wearing a green jersey, we throw it to him again and again. He drops every pass, but we cheer for him anyway; the kid smiles wildly, and his dad nods appreciatively at us whenever one of us catches his eye. Jake and I are the farthest apart, and we send each other long passes down the street and often have to run even farther to catch the throws. Neither of us drops a single pass, because we are excellent athletes. My dad mostly just stands around sipping his beer, but we throw him some easy balls, which he catches with one hand and then tosses the football underhand to Ronnie, who is standing closest to him. Ronnie has a weak arm, but neither Jake nor I point this out, because he is our friend and we are all wearing green and the sun is shining and the Eagles are winning and we are so full of good hot food and ice-cold beer it doesn't really matter that Ronnie's athletic ability is not equal to ours. When Mom announces that halftime is almost over, Jake runs over to the little kid; my brother puts his hands in the air and yells â€Å"Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh!† until the kid's dad does the same thing. The little guy catches on after only a second, puts his hands in the air, yells â€Å"Ahhhhhhhhhhh!† and then we all do the Eagles chant – spelling the letters out with our arms and legs – before running back into our respective family rooms. Donte Stallworth continues to be the man in the second half, gaining almost 150 yards and a TD, while Baskett does not even get a decent ball thrown to him and fails to record a single catch. I'm not all that upset about this, because a funny thing happens at the end of the game. When the Eagles win 24 – 10, we all stand to sing the Eagles fight song together like we always do whenever the Birds win a regular season game. My brother throws his arms around Ronnie and me and says, â€Å"Come on, Dad.† My dad is a little drunk from all the beer and so happy about the Eagles victory – and the fact that McNabb threw for more than 300 yards – that he lines up with us and throws his arm around my shoulders, which shocks me at first, not because I don't like being touched, but because my father has not put his arm around me in many years. The weight and warmth of his arm makes me feel good, and as we sing the fight song and do the chant afterward, I catch my mother looking at us from the kitchen, where she is washing dishes. She smiles at me even though she is crying again, and I wonder why as I sing and spell and chant. Jake asks Ronnie if he needs a ride home, and my best friend says, â€Å"No, thanks. Hank Baskett is walking me home.† â€Å"I am?† I say, because Hank Baskett is the name Ronnie and Jake called me all throughout the game – so I know he really means me. â€Å"Yep,† he says, and we grab the football on the way out. When we get to Knight's Park, we throw the football back and forth, standing only twenty feet away from each other because Ronnie has a weak arm, and after a few catches my best friend asks me what I think about Tiffany. â€Å"Nothing,† I say. â€Å"I don't think anything about her at all. Why?† â€Å"Veronica told me that Tiffany follows you when you run. True?† I catch a wobbly pass, say, â€Å"Yeah. It's sort of weird. She knows my schedule and everything,† and throw a perfect spiral just over Ronnie's right shoulder so he can catch it on the run. He doesn't turn. He doesn't run. The ball goes over his head. Ronnie retrieves the ball, jogs back into his range, and says, â€Å"Tiffany is a little odd. Do you understand what I mean by odd, Pat?† I catch his even more wobbly pass just before it reaches my right kneecap, and say, â€Å"I guess.† I understand that Tiffany is different from most girls, but I also understand what it is like to be separated from your spouse, which is something Ronnie does not understand. So I ask, â€Å"Odd how? Odd like me?† His face drops, and then he says, â€Å"No. I didn't mean †¦ It's just that Tiffany is seeing a therapist – â€Å" â€Å"So am I.† â€Å"I know, but – â€Å" â€Å"So seeing a therapist makes me odd?† â€Å"No. Just listen to me for a second. I'm trying to be your friend. Okay?† I look down at the grass as Ronnie walks over to me. I don't really want to hear Ronnie talk his way out of this one, because Ronnie is the only friend I have, now that I am out of the bad place, and we have had such a great day, and the Eagles have won, and my father put his arm around me, and – â€Å"I know Tiffany and you went out to dinner, which is great. You both could probably use a friend who understands loss.† I don't like the way he collectively uses the word â€Å"loss,† as if I have lost Nikki – as in forever – because I am still riding out apart time and I have not lost her yet. But I don't say anything, and let him continue. â€Å"Listen,† Ronnie says. â€Å"I want to tell you why Tiffany was fired from her job.† â€Å"That's none of my business.† â€Å"It is if you are going to have dinners with her. Listen, you need to know that †¦Ã¢â‚¬ Ronnie tells me what he believes is the story of how Tiffany lost her job, but the way he tells it proves he is biased. He tells it just like Dr. Timbers would, stating what he would call â€Å"facts,† with no regard for what was going on in Tiffany's head. He tells me what coworkers wrote in their reports, he tells me what her boss told her parents and what the therapist has since said to Veronica – who is Tiffany's designated support buddy and therefore has weekly phone conversations with Tiffany's therapist – but he never once tells me what Tiffany thinks or what is going on in her heart: the awful feelings, the conflicting impulses, the needs, the desperation, everything that makes her different from Ronnie and Veronica, who have each other and their daughter, Emily, and a good income and a house and everything else that keeps people from calling them â€Å"odd.† What amazes me is that Ronnie is telling me all this in a friendly manner, as if he is try ing to save me from Tiffany's ways, as if he knows more about these sorts of things than I do, as if I had not spent the last few months in a mental institution. He does not understand Tiffany, and he sure as hell doesn't understand me, but I do not hold it against Ronnie, because I am practicing being kind rather than right, so Nikki will be able to love me again when apart time is over. â€Å"So I'm not telling you to be mean or to gossip about her – just protect yourself, okay?† Ronnie says, and I nod. â€Å"Well, I better be getting home to Veronica. Maybe I'll drop in this week for a lifting session? Cool?† I nod again and watch him jog away from me, the bouncy steps suggesting that he thinks his mission is accomplished. It is obvious he was only allowed to watch the game because Veronica wanted him to talk to me about Tiffany, probably because Veronica thought I might take advantage of her nymphomaniac sister, which makes me very mad, and before I know it, I'm ringing the Websters' doorbell. â€Å"Hello?† Tiffany's mom says to me when the door opens. She is older-looking, with gray hair and a heavy sweater-coat, even though it is only September and she is inside. â€Å"May I speak with Tiffany?† â€Å"You're Ronnie's friend, right? Pat Peoples?† I only nod, because I know Mrs. Webster knows who I am. â€Å"Do you mind if I ask what you want with our daughter?† â€Å"Who's there?† I hear Tiffany's father call from the other room. â€Å"It's just Ronnie's friend, Pat Peoples!† Mrs. Webster yells. To me she says, â€Å"So what do you want with our Tiffany?† I look down at the football in my hand and say, â€Å"I want to have a catch. It's a beautiful afternoon. Maybe she would like to get some fresh air in the park?† â€Å"Just a catch?† Mrs. Webster says. I hold up my wedding ring to prove I do not want to have sex with her daughter, and say, â€Å"Listen, I'm married. I just want to be Tiffany's friend, okay?† Mrs. Webster looks a little surprised by my answer, which is odd because I was sure that was the answer she wanted to hear. But after a moment she says, â€Å"Go around back and knock on the door.† So I knock on the back door, but no one answers. I knock three more times and then leave. I'm halfway through the park when I hear a swishy sound behind me. When I turn around, Tiffany is speed walking toward me, wearing a pink tracksuit made from a material that swishes when one pant leg rubs against the other. When she is about five feet away, I throw her a light, girly pass, but she steps aside and the football falls to the ground. â€Å"What do you want?† she says. â€Å"Want to have a catch?† â€Å"I hate football. I told you this, no?† Since she doesn't want to have a catch, I decide I'll just ask her my question: â€Å"Why do you follow me when I run?† â€Å"Honestly?† â€Å"Yeah,† I say. She squints her eyes and makes her face look mean. â€Å"I'm scouting you.† â€Å"What?† â€Å"I said I'm scouting you.† â€Å"Why?† â€Å"To see if you are fit enough.† â€Å"Fit enough for what?† But instead of answering my question, she says, â€Å"I'm also scouting your work ethic, your endurance, the way you deal with mental strain, your ability to persevere when you are unsure of what is happening around you, and – â€Å" â€Å"Why?† â€Å"I can't tell you yet,† she says. â€Å"Why not?† â€Å"Because I haven't finished scouting you.† When she walks away, I follow her past the pond, over the footbridge, and out of the park. But neither of us speaks again. She leads me to Haddon Avenue, and we walk by the new stores and swanky restaurants, passing lots of other pedestrians, kids on skateboards, and men who raise their fists in the air and say, â€Å"Go Eagles!† when they see my Hank Baskett jersey. Tiffany turns off Haddon Avenue and weaves through residential blocks until we are in front of my parents' house, where she stops, looks at me, and – after almost an hour of silence – says, â€Å"Did your team win?† I nod. â€Å"Twenty-four to ten.† â€Å"Lucky you,† Tiffany says, and then walks away.

Lab Report Conclusion

Conclusion In this experiment, we measured the mass of 4 gasses; oxygen, carbon dioxide, helium, and lab gas. We took a Ziplock bag, and turned into a non-stretchy balloon, and filled with each gas and measured the apparent mass then calculated the actual mass, then find a ratio between the mass of oxygen and the other gasses. We tried to keep the pressure about the same each time so our calculations would be more accurate. We found out that the heaviest was carbon dioxide, and the lightest was helium. In fact, helium and lab gas had a density below 0. Anyways, it turned out that our apparent masses were very different from our actual mass calculations; for example oxygen’s apparent mass was 28. 33g but its actual mass was 4. 10g. We also found the ratios, and after collecting class data, our carbon dioxide ratio was 1. 39/1g, our helium ratio was . 21/1g, and our lab gas ratio was . 59/1g. Then we had to come up with two hypotheses to figure out why one gas is heavier (denser) than another?Well, we came up with hypothesis #1: The different molecule mass hypothesis, and hypothesis #2: The more molecules in the same volume hypothesis. After having a class discussion, turns out that hypothesis one is more reliable due to Avogadro’s hypothesis; if two gasses at the same temperature and equal volume contain equal amount of molecules. So according to the statement above, the carbon dioxide molecules must be 1. 39x bigger than an oxygen molecule, a helium molecule must be . 21x bigger, and . 59x bigger than an oxygen molecule.

The clusters Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

The clusters - Essay Example Agreeableness is a personality trait that is present in people who easily agree to what others have to say. They are not stubborn and are flexible in decision making. Lastly, conscientiousness is a personality trait grouping together people who do not take impulsive decisions, but give vast attention to what they do and how it might effect their reputation. They are the types who are deeply concerned about what others have to say about them. In my opinion, I fall under the category of neuroticism, as I happen to be a highly sensitive person. I tend to stay quiet in large meetings, and am often lost in thought. I take matters too personally, getting upset at the slightest of things. As much as I dislike this personality trait of mine, I find it difficult to rid these traits off. The second group in which I may be categorized is agreeableness. I do not like arguments, am I good listener and generally agree on what others have to say. I do not press much on statements I make and vary my opinion if someone else has a more convincing argument. Thus, I consider my self to be highly agreeable. Lastly, I am also a part of the group of people who fall under the title of conscientiousness. I am careful in choosing my words during a conversation, conscious that I do not end up offending the other person in any way.

Managing Organisational Change Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

Managing Organisational Change - Essay Example The benefits that the company was tagged to get from its customer value creation program were the fact that customers would have the opportunity to see the company deliver on their needs and so have an established morale to continue doing business with the company. The challenge with this model was found to be the need to upgrade the company’s human resource base to welcome the change at hand since the customer relationship management was going to be technology driven and all stakeholders needed to match up to this. On revenue creation, revenue management was identified as the most ideal strategy. This was found beneficial because it could help in raising immediate capital for the company especially during holiday season when tourism activities were higher. Revenue management was to involve the hiking of prices for specific services delivered to specific people within a specific timeframe. The challenge associated with this has to be the inconvenience of existing customers to adjust to this new management culture. Lastly, the company was admonished to go into merger as a long term strategy for its expansion model. By merger, a company in the tourism industry was to be identified and joined with the existing coaches company. Change is an integral part of our daily lives. In fact, it is will difficult to imagine life without change. Such need for change is professed in all human institutions and organizations. Once there is change in the systems and structures of running an organization, we say organizational change has taken place (McCarthy, 2001). But the fact that change is inevitable and necessary does not mean that change should just happen. Experts advise that organizational change â€Å"should be seen as a discrete and specialized work stream† (Wallace, 2007). This means that organizational change is not as crucial as the management of it – thus

This essay discusses that as a direct result of advances in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) through the internet, citizens have developed a whole new set of expectations regarding the methods and processes used in interacting with their respective governments. Following in the footsteps of the revolution in consumer purchasing that E-commerce established, e government (electronic government) has been stated by studies such as those by Dodd as the new wave of the future in public sector interaction between citizens and government offices for the next generation. e government can be described as the implementation of digital processes and technologies in order to increase efficiency, reliability and coverage of internal and external government services and information sharing to citizens while at the same time implementing a concept known as "lean governance" wherein wasteful spending, processes and methods of operation are in effect eliminated as a direct result of util izing e government procedures and systems. It is based on these perceived benefits that a large number of developed and developing countries around the world have begun to allocate resources towards e government programs and initiatives. In fact, as seen in the article "From e government to Connected Governance" a survey conducted by the United Nations in 2010 showed that 189 out of 192 member states were actually pushing through with a significant amount of e government initiatives.

Gene Autry Museum Visit Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Gene Autry Museum Visit - Essay Example time passed by, the center has increasingly expanded its performance to involve some emphases on other Westerners like Asians, Mexicans, African Americans, and Native Americans (Lemanczyk 2007, 50). At present, the center’s primary emphasis is on the union or meeting points of cultural practices in the American West. The Autry National Center is a museum of American West’s history, with collections and displays of relics and art works from the historical age of White imperialism in the 19th century, and it is also regarded a museum of symbols, myths, and images of the West, with quite a few masterpieces by Western artists, and a broad array of Western goods, mementos, costumes, etc. The center houses a research department which routinely conducts special expositions and events, and makes publications. Undoubtedly, the center is the leading museum of the American motion picture. . Â   In spite of the alienation I felt when I entered the center and being welcomed by the full-size imitation of Gene Autry, the center is, without a doubt, dedicated to the American West, particularly to cowboys and Native Americans. The center, apparently, has witnessed the honing of its vision and the expansion of its performance as it has struggled to become a site where the legends of the American West would occupy an important part in American history. Nevertheless, as I have observed, in spite of the committed hard work of Autry there was a very obvious dilemma. Several of the center’s visitors erroneously thought that Indians basically died out. The solution to this dilemma was easy, that is, to allow living Indians express and exhibit their own cultural history. One of the most remarkable and memorable exhibits I have seen in the center is the ‘reservation’, and although not all American Indians have went through this historical period, it is a site of legendary importance in the perception of American Indians. Several Natives who grew up in cities have an idealized

Change in Management and Leadership Style Essay

Change in Management and Leadership Style - Essay Example This essay examines the leadership and management structures within the company’s human resource approach to the establishment of Virgin Galactic business venture. Leadership and Management The main human resource related issue within the Virgin Atlantic structure is the company’s approach to the Galactic Project. The Galactic Project is the company’s mission to establish commercial trips to suborbital space stations. The mission began in 2004 and has been in development since this period. The spacecraft flights are intended to be robust and affordable to the extent that they can take passengers in a relatively affordable way ($200,000 per passenger). The space flight will overlap the Earth’s atmosphere in a suborbital way flight. Passengers will experience a brief period of weightlessness – 6 minutes – where passengers will be able to detach themselves from their seats. In considering the key business challenges within this organizational pr ogram, it’s clear that there are a wide variety of leadership and management elements that must be considered. While a comprehensive articulation of these elements would require an analysis as large scale as Sir Richard Branson’s space flight operation, this report functions to consider the issue from an overarching perspective. Within this context of understanding, the first major consideration is the Virgin Galactic overriding business structure. In examining this element, the Burke Litwin model of organizational change is implemented in gaining a greater management understanding. In terms of the Burke Litwin model, there are twelve major organizational areas of consideration, with management structure being an important area of concern (Burke 2011). The Virgin Galactic management structure is currently noted as consisting of CEO and President George Whitesides, Stephen Attenborough as the Commercial Director, and Jonathan Firth as the Director of Operations & Projec ts (‘Our Team’ 2010). Another prominent aspect of the Burke Litwin model is the investigation into organizational culture. In terms of organizational culture Virgin Atlantic has gained a reputation for both innovation and efficiency. In addition to these elements, perhaps because of its flamboyant president, the company has also gained a reputation for sensationalism (Manning 2011). While such an organizational culture creates a progressive and creative atmosphere, for the implementation of large-scale experimental practices one can argue that such a practice is detrimental to company success. The Burke Litwin model also considers the nature of the external environment. In these regards, this specific business challenge faces competition from a number of competing space airliners. There is also concern over increased government regulations. Another major business analysis model is the McKinsey 7S Framework. This framework considers the interaction of seven components to , â€Å"Improve the performance of a company† and â€Å"Determine how best to implement a proposed strategy†. Within the context of this analytic tool are the hard elements of ‘strategy, structure, and systems’. Currently, the business venture’s organizational structure functions within the Virgin empire, yet involves a partnership with aerospace designing firm Scales Composites. Similarly, CEO and President

Brand Health Check - Essay Example In order to regain financial stability and overcome losses, playboy has extended its target market to a broader spectrum and positioned the brand in a different way. The whole targeting approach is explained below: Playboy has done the market segmentation based on the demographic factors especially gender, income profile and business groups in which the potential consumers belong. During the launch of the magazine its target market was the working men but after the decline of sales in 1982’s, they have shifted their focus to working class women also. The current median age of their target age group is 33. Playboy has introduced their product in variety of mediums such as television and online. Visual products were targeted to couple, irrespective of their working class, and the online media for market penetration and reach. (Playboy Enterprises. N.d) In 1990s, the declining sales figure forced playboy to rethink their market segmentation, targeting and positioning strategy. They discovered that explosive growths are available in Far East market, like in Japan. The company realized that change in income profile in Japan has changed the demographic as well as the psychographic orientation of the customers. Hence the segmentation was done according to the psychographics of the consumers. As people started to get out of the workaholic and obsessive behavior, their mindset also changes and the targeting strategies must be restructured in order to expand the market.(The Tech, 1990) Recent studies have shown that in order to stop the ever decreasing sales figure, playboy needs to rethink their positioning strategy in a different way. Playboy is no longer considered to be the lifestyle magazine against the conservative male norms. The company is targeting the middle-aged uneducated and under-paid people too because of product saturation in the existing market (Lapp.2013). Market share can be

Comparison of Little Red Riding Hood from Different Countries Essay Example for Free

Comparison of Little Red Riding Hood from Different Countries Essay Every so often, there comes a story so popular that it survives many decades and is common in many cultures. Growing up here in America, I was always told the story of Little Red Riding Hood. Because of the way American structure is set up, the story in this culture teaches the people told the story a lesson as well as has a happy ending. The American story of â€Å"Little Red Riding Hood† isn’t the only version of this story. As previously mentioned, there are stories that survive many decades and last through many cultures; this is one of them. However, they all have different names. There are also: Little Red Cap, Little Red Hood, The Grandmother, The True History of Little Golden Hood, Grandmother’s Nose, and Little Red Hat. These stories come from many different areas such as Germany, Poland, Italy, Austria, and France, and they have many different authors. There are two things that do stay the same throughout every retelling of this story, the characters and idea. There is always a little girl, her grandmother, her mother, and the wolf. Additionally, in every retelling, it involves the little girl having to go to her grandmother’s house to deliver something to her. However, the actions taken by the characters and their personalities change in every telling of the story. Although every version of Little Red Riding Hood has a similar idea, the characterization and moral of the story alters based upon what time period and location it was written in because of the influences of the country of origin’s stereotypes, ideals, and events.

Social Media as Emerging Technology

Social Media as Emerging Technology Investigate emerging IT technologies:  Social Networks appear to be all  the rage at the moment. Introduction Psychology is classically defined as â€Å"†¦ The science of behavior †¦Ã¢â‚¬ , which in the case of human beings manifests itself when others are present, thus representing behavioral instances in social interaction (Kenny, 1996). The phenomenon of socialization and networking have been extended by the global presence of the Internet whereby individuals through specific social networking websites have access to a broad context of toher individuals that is further defined by the type of website which have differing population, age and constituency compositions (Freeman, 2004, pp. 10- 29). The internet through emails, instant messaging, online dating and blogging has created a relatively secure means for people to engage in socialized behavior while being able to feel relatively safe in terms of personality differences and other areas that might not be the case in situations whereby they are exposed to individuals on a direct basis with whom they might not have common inte rest areas and or outlooks (Ethier, 2004). All of the preceding factors are components that have given rise to the dramatic increase and popularity in online social network services. Classmates.com, which was started in 1995, represented the first social network website, which was followed by Company of Friends that was the online network of the magazine Fast Company in 1997 that began the era of business networking (FastCompany.com, 2004). The promise of privacy, like-minded interests, and being able to socialize saw online social networking become extremely popular in 2002 and increase to the point where presently there are over 200 of these types of web sites globally (RateItAll.com, 2007). And as it is with any type of activity that attracts large numbers of people, social networking is big business. As a result the Internet has and is offering firms in this sphere an advantage in bringing together distinct profiles of individuals with marketing potential beyond any fees or charges to the members (Robson, 1996, pp. 250-26 0). However, that business segment, social networking, is increasing taking on the look of the dot-com frenzy that gripped in Internet in 2001 (Madslien, 2005). As was the question then, looms as the same questions now regarding online social networking. What are their business models? What type of revenue are they generating? What is their profitability? What are their differences and will the phenomenon last? These factors are areas that will be explored herein. Online social networks are forums whereby people can meet new individuals, network and initiate or maintain contact with old acquaintances through the relative privacy of the Internet, thus enabling business or socially minded people to enlarge their spheres through providing and exchanging information on themselves (Epic.org, 2006). Facebook (2007) is system comprised of a number of networks, with each one based around a region, or company, high school and or college that permits its users to share information on themselves that allows a broad category of differing types and demographics of people to use their social networks as opposed to offering contacts that are geared to a specific type of profile. Thus it provides a more diverse population and appeal to advertisers implementing this type of expanded user profile. The differing networks within Facebook are independent as well as being closed off to users that are non-affiliated thereby providing control over the content to spec ific group profiles. It, Facebook, is an English language web site that enjoys popularity among college students as its largest profile group, numbering in excess of 17 million, or roughly 85% of all U.S. college students (Arrington, 2006). Facebook is free for users, utilizing advertising, banner ads and sponsored groups for revenues that are estimated to be in the area of $53,000,000 annually (Arrington, 2006). Another type of social networking web site is LinkedIn, which is business oriented, primarily established to enable professional networking (Dragan, 2004). The company’s 40,000 member list includes such high profile individuals as company vice presidents, over 700, Chief Executive Officers, over 500, and 140 Chief Treasury Officers (Dragan, 2004). Not yet generating a profit, LinkedIn, charges a fee regarding its basic service and charges what it terms as ‘power users’ representing executive recruiters, investment professionals and sales representatives who use the service to tap into its network an additional charge (Liedtke, 2004). Many members utilized their personal contacts and associates to find, fill jobs and to increase their sales, thus offering a very high select user profile that also generates income from advertisers, however, the business model has yet to prove profitable (Liedtke, 2004). Founded in 2003, it has become a sort of ‘in’ plac e for professionals increasingly identifying its members as being in a special group of movers and shakers, as it is termed (Copeland, 2006). At present, LinkedIn has existed on venture capital funding representing almost $15 million USD from investors such as Sequoia Capital along with Greylock, with the company’s business model based upon advertising revenue and fees projected to generate $100 million in revenues by the year 2008 (Copeland, 2006). The goal is to increase the web site’s membership making it the number one professional resource for business and networking, job referrals, references, experts and whatever else is needed for professionals (Copeland, 2006). The younger generation of teens and those in their early twenties tend to use hi5, which has over 40 million members in the pattern of a MySpace social network (Mashable.com, 2006). The massive traffic the web site generates makes it the eighth most visited social network web site in the United States, but is losing market share in the face of rival companies such as Facebook, Bebo, Piczo, Tagworld, Multiply and others that also covet this user group, with MySpace as the dominant performer, stealing market share from all these rivals (Mashable.com, 2006). In keeping with the general social network format, hi5 offers profile pages with basic services offered for free and the site, like others, generating revenues from advertising, banner ads and referrals to music and other web sites such as iTunes for music downloads. The mode of this social network allows users to connect to their friends, build and introduce themselves to new ones as well as invite their own (hi5.com, 2007). Still in the venture capital backed stage, hi5 does not provide information on its revenues or related data. Bebo (2007), as is the case with social networking sites geared at the younger generation, offers users the ability to post their pictures, write blogs and of course send messages. A relative newcomer, 2005, Bebo like hi5, Facebook, Tagworld, Multiply and other allows users to post their talents on their personal pages on a special â€Å"New Music Only on Bebo† section (Bebo, 2007). Any discussion of online social networks must of course include MySpace, the largest web site of its kind, achieving almost 80% of online visits in this category (Answers.com, 2007a). With over 125 million users the site is targeted at the teenage and under thirty crowd that in typical fashion, allows users to create their own personal profile pages that can be enhanced with HTML code to make them into multimedia pages (Answers.com, 2007a). This aspect allows users to post special aspects on themselves, such as their talents, videos, music and paintings, with its success being proven by its purchase by News Corporation for in excess of 500 million USD (Answers.com, 2007a). MySpace business model of advertising revenues, banners and fees has achieved success as a result of size, the determining factor in Internet related businesses. Friends United in the UK represents a combination of all of the other online social networking sites discussed. It encourages friends, family and individuals to connect for reunions, communication, genealogy, socializing, dating and like LinkedIn it offers job searches and job hunting (Friends Reunited, 2007). And in going one better than its American counterparts, the site offers television broadcasts via the company’s parent company ITV network as well as the popular format of music CD collections. All of these facets are revenue generators that users can access free (Answers.com, 2007b). With 15 million members, Friends United has access to almost half of all UK households with Internet service and was founded on the idea of the owners, Steve and Julie Pankhurst, who were looking for old classmates and found a lost friend of 30 years (Answers.com, 2007b). The success of the multiple interest web site, combining all of the features found in the highly successful U.S. social networks, and with its own fresh new wrinkles such as television broadcasts, resulted from the purchase of the company from the Pankhursts by ITV in December of 2005 for  £120,000,000. As would be expected, online social networks have become a global phenomenon that has taken off particularly in the Asian region. Japan’s top social networking site ‘Mixi’ is a highly organized, in Japanese fashion, web site that is a kind of MySpace knock off in the Japanese language, utilizing the same advertising, banner ad, music referral business model (Kageyama, 2007). The cultural nuance is apparent in that â€Å"MySpace is about me, me, me and look at me †¦Ã¢â‚¬ , whereas â€Å" †¦ Mixi, is not all about me. It’s all about us† reflecting the more reserved nature of the Japanese culture (Kageyama, 2007). Social networks of the non online variety have long been a fixture of Asian societies, and in Korea CyWorld has grown to the point where it is launching a U.S. version with an initial investment of $10 million USD and a pledge to spend whatever it takes to be successful. (Kirkpatrick, 2006). With versions in Japan as well as China and Taiwan, CyWorld is an example of the universal nature of the social networking business model. The formulas utilized globally are basically the same, free access, bring in large numbers of people, charge advertisers, and diversify the revenue stream through music, television access, movie CD’s and other sources. Conclusion As was and is the case in the United States as represented by MySpace, market share and dominance determine value, to advertisers, investors and buyers. Friends United is the largest social networking site in the UK and commanded the same interest on the part of a large corporation that MySpace did in the U.S. Success translates as having a commanding percentage of a nation’s user profile, which aids in the web site being able to attract better and more advertisers at increased rates, along with banner ads, music web site referrals and other revenue streams. The venture capital backed nature of the online social network sites makes access to their profitability elusive, with all but the most popular sites, as indicated having been either acquired by large corporations, MySpace – Friends Reunited for example, or having an expansive nature, CyWorld and MySpace, indicating that revenues and profits must be adequate if not substantial. As eBay and Yahoo have proven, market dominance does translate into revenues, but there is a lag time that takes well heeled investors or corporations to underwrite. And the stakes have made the game hotter as more entrants as well as current players up the ante (Hicks, 2004). But, that is not all bad news as â€Å"†¦ not all online social networks are the same †¦Ã¢â‚¬ (Jacobs, 2006). And while the differences in demographics, profiles, appeal and niche are similar, the tremendous online numbers allow for the distinctions (Jacobs, 2006). And as is the case with dominant sized competitors, they have the clout to slowly dip into their smaller competitors, thus increasing their size advantage, or accomplishing the same through acquisition. And this brings up the other side of the coin, with most of the online social network sites funded by venture capitalists who are in it for the sell off to another company, and or stock play, is the phenomenon one that is ready to burst (seomoz.org, 2006). MySpace has yet to prove its $580 million investment by Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation despite its size, and the venture capital market, which has pumped more that $824 million into the sector since 2001 is still awaiting returns on most of that money (Rosmarin, 2006). But, with MySpace and Friends Reunited pulling in almost half of their respective countries Internet access subscribers, the potential for huge profits represents a bet that most companies have opted not to miss out on. Privately held Facebook’s recent rejection of a $750 million offer is a demonstration of this point (Rosenbush, 2006). The jury and the results are still out as the industry grows and some consolidation occurs, then the real story will reveal itself in terms of profitability as well as staying power. Mother’s Fight with Cancer :: Influential Person Essays

Mother’s Fight with Cancer I am learning, both through observations and first-hand experiences, that there are many mishaps in life which seem to be unexplainable and unfair, and yet have devastating consequences. Disease fits into this category. Its atrocity does not stem from the fact that it is a rare or uncommon occurrence, since illness and disease pervade our lives as we hear numerous stories of sick people and come into contact with them each day. However, there is a marked difference between reading in the newspaper that a famous rock star or sports icon has tested H.I.V. positive and discovering that your own mother has been diagnosed with cancer. Undoubtedly, the most influential people in my life have been my mother and father. It is to them that I credit many of my accomplish-ments and successes-both inside and outside of school. Throughout my childhood, my parents have always fostered and encouraged me in all my endeavors. At all my sporting events, spelling bees, concerts, and countless other activities, they have always been front row and center. My parents, in conjunction with twelve years of Catholic training, have also instilled in me a sound belief in a loving, caring God, which I have come to firmly believe. It therefore should not come as a surprise that the news of my mothers sickness would greatly alter my entire outlook on life. Where was my God? My mother, in fact, had been aware of her condition in the spring of my junior year in high school. She deliberately did not inform my sister or me of her illness because she did not want to distract us from our studies. Instead, my mother waited for the completion of her radiation therapy treatments. At this time, she brought me into her room, sat me down on the same wooden rocking chair from which she used to read me bedtime stories, and began to relate her story. I did not weep, I did not flinch. In fact, I hardly even moved, but from that point onward, I vowed that I would do anything and everything to please my mother and make her proud of me. Every subsequent award won and every honor bestowed upon me has been inspired by the recollection of my mother’s plight. I look to her as a driving force of motivation. In her I see the firm, enduring qualities of courage, strength, hope, and especially love.

The long and the short and the tall :: English Literature

The long and the short and the tall In 1942, a small British platoon was positioned in the jungle trying to assess the strength of the Japanese invasion. They were 20 miles away from the British frontlines and 15 miles away from base camp. They rest for a while in a deserted hut. Their radio has a flat battery and they are having trouble getting in touch with their base camp. The platoon is led by Sergeant Mitchem, who is in control of 6 ordinary men; hence the title from Britain; Bamforth; a Cockney, Whitaker; Tynesider, Macleish; a Scot, Evan; Welsh, Smith (Smudge) and Johnstone. All had left their jobs back in Britain to fight in the war. All had never been faced with killing a man. A few of the soldiers are family men, leaving their wife, children and friends back in their home towns. They are all from Britain and as they spend time together they find out and understand about each person's personality more. Bamforth: When Bamforth first sees the Japanese soldier, he is prepared to shoot him: 'Bamforth suddenly tenses and raises his rifle. This is followed by: 'Bamforth slowly raises his rifle and takes careful aim. Mitchem swings round and knocks the rifle out of position.' "I had him right between the cheeks! I couldn't miss! He's on his tod!" Bamforth was obviously prepared to kill the lone Japanese soldier and was quite frustrated when his chance is taken from him. He would show this by gritting his teeth or cursing under his breath. Later on when the Japanese soldier enters the hut and is grabbed by Johnstone, and Evans, Smith and Macleish all refuse to kill the soldier, but Bamforth is more than happy to 'Knock him off'. He would be speaking in an aggressive tone of voice. On stage he would be ruthless, grabbing the bayonet, and with a tremendous amount of strength, he would thrust the bayonet towards the prisoner. "Here, give me a hold. It's only the same as carving up a pig. Hold him still" Had Mitchem not intervened then Bamforth would have killed the soldier. Mitchem did so to keep him for any important information which may be needed at base camp. The Japanese soldier would be petrified at this point, being alone and unarmed. Yet Bamforth still persisted in scaring the soldier: "Boo" He also waved a bayonet in front of the prisoners face. Then he decided to mimic the prisoner by imitating a crude Japanese accent: "Flingers on Blonce" and "Tojo" He also used humiliating remarks such as "Short arse". His tone of voice would be quite sarcastic, as if he was talking to a

The Bird Motif in Invisible Man Essay -- Ralph Ellison, Invisible Man

In Ralph Ellison's novel, Invisible Man, the narrator must go through a journey of self discovery. He does not identify himself with the black people, nor is he a part of the white culture. Throughout the novel, Ellison uses the bird motif emphasize the personalities of the groups that he is describing. In his humble beginnings the narrator's greatest desire is to achieve the power that would earn him respect from all races of people. He attempts to achieve this by adapting white ideals and adopting white customs. With the opportunity of going to New York, the narrator's future is open to many possibilities. "Man's hope can paint a purple picture, can transform a soaring vulture into a noble eagle or a moaning dove"(126). The narrator can either succeed at being powerful and influential or he can be one of the persons who talks too much, but shows no action. He does not want to be a part of the masses of black people that do not know what it is that they really want. They want to be happy, but do not know how to achieve this happiness. Ellison often compares birds to black...

Are we all fundamentally the same?

We are all equal in the fact that we are all different. We are all the same in the fact that we will never be the same. We are united by the reality that all colors and all cultures are distinct & individual. We are harmonious in the reality that we are all held to this earth by the same gravity. We don't share blood, but we share the air that keeps us alive. How can we get people to understand that we really are fundamentally the same? I agree, that perceived specialness, drive for fulfillments, experience a life of meaning and Conception/love fundamentally makes us the same, yes we have the same needs but express them differently. We humans are similar but we have a particular need or erg to be unique however, some of us may argue with the fact that we are not fundamentally the same, as we all are not blessed with unique qualities. This may be the struggle but we all have at least one or more difference that makes us unique and as time passes we realize it ourselves. Although we all have this erg for fulfillment but culturally we express that need in different ways for example ‘Frozen’ by Chris Buck, Jennifer Lee, Elsa (character) – From the outside, Elsa looks poised, regal, and reserved, but in reality, she lives in fear as she wrestles with a mighty secret. Queen looks confident and mature, but she’s actually lonely and frightened, because of her special ability as she is not like everyone else. Her feelings are loneliness, Guilt and fear. She’s fearful of others because she thinks they will be afraid and hunt her down if they know about her powers. Once she opens up to herself and accepts her self for whom she is, she goes through this completely different phase full of laughter and self-confidence. Frozen is in format of a film and this is an effective way to put across their message as an animated film because they are watched by a wide range of audience including, families, adults, teenagers and children. In this case Elsa’s community did not accept her when she revealed her powers as they tried to hunt her down and take away her powers but using her powers and accepting her self is happiness to elsa but her community wasn’t ready to accept that. However, it is our own decision to trust our own ability to follow our own decision to trust our own ability to follow our heart and admit our differences as it can inspire others. Happy Feet’ by George Miller expresses also expresses this erge of uniqueness. Mumble (character) expresses his uniqueness by toe tapping, as he can’t sing like other penguins, which makes him different. This text is targeted at disabled people or people who can’t fit in to have faith and believe in themselves with what they can do. Hiss community wasn’t ready to appreciate his uniqueness, fortunately he didn’t feel inferior, as he was aware of his ability. Negative affectivity can make one feel guilt, fear and nervousness. The fact that we display those themes but we express it differently in different ways, makes us different. We have lots of ways for expressing it, it’s the ability for us to differentiate us from others. I have come across two texts that reveal that humans are fundamentally the samead the erg for uniqueness. We just need to be ourselves, I chose frozen because it has affected me personally and has taught me a lesson in life as well as happy feet, It puts me into deep understanding and makes me reflect on to my life and makes me reflect on to my life and makes me want to achieve anything in the world I wish to accomplish.

Passing A Bill In Congress Essay

In general, for a bill to get through congress it must be introduced into either the House of Representatives or the Senate. Before getting to a vote, a bill must be sponsored or written by a member or members of congress. Then, the bill will head to committees and subcommittees where is will be fleshed out by various members of congress as well as competing interests in congress. It then must be introduced to the floor where it can be brought up for a vote. Please note, it is not uncommon for bills to â€Å"die† in committee. That is, for various reasons, the bill is never brought to the floor for a vote. There are a number of reasons for this, but usually it is because either the bill has so little support that brining it to a vote where is would lose tremendously would be considered a waste of time. When the bill passes one area by 51% on final vote it then moved to the other area where it must pass by 51%. (Please note: certain bills such as bills dealing with taxation) must be initiated only in the House as opposed to the Senate. Also, the Senate must close out final vote with 60 Senators in agreement to end amendments and discussion to the bill before moving on to final vote. After the Bill passes both Houses of Congress, it then goes to the President’s desk where it is signed into law or vetoed. If vetoed, the president’s veto can be overridden by Congress voting in favor of the bill by a 2/3 majority; in such an instance, the bill then becomes the law of the land. On a side note, there is somewhat more partisanship in the Senate because of the fact that there are only 100 members as opposed to the 435 members found in the House. As such, the votes in the Senate are usually viewed by the public as being more â€Å"in line† with a party’s stance as opposed to the House where votes are considered more reflective of locality. The numbers of roadblocks that can derail a bill are vast. However, if recent history was an indication of what the most common methods a bill can be derailed it would be one of two things: and inability to â€Å"purchase† the votes of representatives with earmarks and the public learning more about the bill and becoming dissatisfied. While this may seem like a somewhat cynical statement, it is validated by reports that appear in the newspapers everyday. Often, to get representatives and senators on board for certain bills pork barrel spending (money/spending appropriated for specific local districts) must be utilized in order to purchase the vote. If such a purchase can not be facilitated, a lack of enough votes to process the bill occurs. The other common roadblock for a bill is when the public learns the details of a bill and grows dissatisfied with the bill and then threaten to withhold votes/contributions if the bill passes. Of all the roadblocks to getting a bill passed, the most common throughout American history, however, would be the filibuster. In order for debate on a bill to end in the senate, there must be a 60 vote majority. If this does not occur, the debate can go on forever and the bill may not reach a final vote. Usually, when a bill can not get past the filibuster, it is a â€Å"dead bill† and it is pulled off the floor. If there was any lesson to be learned from the long process it would be the fact that this was a brilliant move on the part of the Founding Fathers as it forces the process to be slow and it gives the public time to be informed about legislation. Because the process is slow, it prevents radical changes in government from occurring too fast and it also prevents the public from being â€Å"blindsided† by legislation that they may not truly support. This allows for a stability in the government system that can be somewhat lacking in other parts of the world.

Motivation Towards Completing A Masters Degree In Marketing Education Essay

In this essay I would wish to discourse the factors that motivated me to make my Masterss in selling and besides why I choose Bangor University. Since childhood, assorted facets of the concern universe intrigued me but the most challenging of them all is marketing. Here, the primary ground for which I wanted to prosecute MBA in marketing from Bangor University ; I steadfastly believe that I will be profiting in my professional every bit good as my personal life. I am keenly interested in heightening my cognition farther beyond my place state, therefore I found Bangor Business School is an first-class topographic point to hone my professional accomplishments and thereby hold a bright hereafter. I steadfastly believe in motive and Maslow ‘s Hierarchy Theory motivated me a batch to take my Masterss. My attack to acquisition is same as that of the Sensor Stimulation Theory ( Laird, 1985 ) . Larid suggested that bulk of the acquisition is done by detecting, which is about 75 % and I agree with him. The issues that anticipate in a group work can be of many grounds ; I personally faced many group work jobs for the last two old ages when I was working at Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited ( BPCL ) , India. The jobs which I faced while working at BPCL in group work are deficiency of treatment about the undertaking work and personal self-importance jobs with the squad members. Rectification could be done when all the group members meet frequently and discourse their several jobs or a strong determination from the direction side will besides works for the jobs faced in groups. What motivated me to analyze my Master ‘s grade at BangorHarmonizing to Meahr & A ; Mwyer ( 1997 ) â€Å" Motivation is a theoretical concept used to explicate the induction, way, strength, continuity, and quality of behavior, particularly purposive behavior † . The theory that motivated me to analyze my Masterss is Maslow ‘s Hierarchy of Needs Theory ( Abraham Maslow, 1943 ) .The theory is fundamentally a classical definition about the human motive. Maslow Theory is explained on the footing of five demands of a human being. The basic five demands are as follows, 1. Physiological demands. 2. Safety demands. 3. Social needs. 4. Esteem needs. 5. Self-actualization demands. Physiological demands can be defined as the basic demands such as air, nutrient, H2O, vesture and shelter or it can be defined as the basic demands of a human being, without the basic needs none can last in the existence. Emotional, physical and environmental safety comes under the safety needs. In item the safety demands can be of security from occupations, household, wellness etc. Bing a mortal psyche the support from the life spouse, parents, equals etc. is pertinent and this known as societal demand for a human being. It may besides include the attention and fondness besides. One can accomplish his/her ends in life merely with the support from household and friends. Internal and external regard demands are the chief demands for any human being. Internal esteem demands means the demand that is developed inside the individual, which could be self-respect, assurance, freedom etc. Some people are extremely confident about the way where they are going and they will be surely accomplis hing their ends without any obstructions. External regard needs comprises of power, position etc. Peoples in the society are extremely witting about the position and the power that they are keeping in the society and this motivates them to accomplish their ends. Finally comes the self-actualization demands, self-actualization can be defined as the desire for self-fulfilment. Self-actualization means the strong desire to accomplish our ends by mensurating our capablenesss. It besides helps to derive more cognition and do the life more originative. When we grow psychologically the chances besides grow continuously. The last factor of Maslow ‘s theory that is self-actualization influenced me a batch, from my school degree itself I was really much interested in the concern sector and I came to this field. After reading this theory during my graduation yearss my purpose to take the Masterss increased. I can hopefully state that this theory motivated me a batch to take my Masterss. After my graduation in Mechanical Engineering I had been working in Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited, India. At that clip my head ever believing about the Masterss and I started look intoing for good universities and I found Bangor would be the best pick for me to take the Masterss and to accomplish my end. When I was traveling through the university website many things attracted and it found to be interesting every bit good. The chief thing is it is one of the oldest and celebrated establishments in UK. It had an overall experience of more than 120 old ages in learning with the international pupils and when I looked the superior chart I found Bangor University is holding a good rank. Many of my friends told me Bangor Business School is the best pick to take your Masterss. The other of import thing about this topographic point is the cost of life ; it is really low when we are comparing with other universities and metropoliss. The university is holding a broad scope of library an d IT resources. Bangor is besides holding a strong research wing and I like to make my research in selling sector here itself. Bangor is besides holding a good occupation zone which will assist the pupils to acquire their portion clip occupation easy. Many calling workshops are conducted by the university, by this we will be acquiring aid in doing a course of study vitae, how to go to an aptitude trial and competence about interviews. More over Bangor is holding a beautiful geographical construction and the metropolis is quiet and free from the noise pollution. All these factors made me to take my Masterss in marketing from Bangor.MY Approach TO LEARNING.Learning can be defined as the lasting alteration in one ‘s behavior or potency from a direct or indirect experience. My attack to acquisition is about like the Traditional centripetal stimulation theory ( Larid, 1985 ) which explains that the acquisition comes to the maximal degree when the senses are stimulated. Larid Ã¢â‚¬Ë œs theory chiefly focus on the five basic centripetal gesture of a human being, which tells us that in bulk of the grownups which is about 75 % acquisition is through seeing. Hearing comes following with merely 13 % , and the remainder three senses such as touch odor and gustatory sensation comprises merely 12 % . If a individual is holding a good multiple senses, he can be a good scholar. Harmonizing to Burn ‘s â€Å" The constructs of persons have different demands and concerns at different times, and that they have subjective readings in different contexts † . From my personal experience I can site out that Larid ‘s theory is a really good attack to larning. I had done my graduation in mechanical technology and at that clip we had to analyze a batch about the working of large machineries like lathe, crunching machine, cosmopolitan proving machine etc. At the clip of talk in category about the working rule of machines I was non to the full digested about the wor king, but when I go to the lab and see the working of these machines I was to the full convinced about the working. This is the same instance when we are analyzing about the working rule of car engines. From my childhood I prefer to see objects instead than hearing about it. I had some other attacks besides towards my acquisition which is known as attack for accelerated acquisition. It consists of four chief aims, they are Target Plan. Track advancement. Make it for life. ( Beginning: – accelerated learning et.al ) The first thing that should be in one ‘s head when he/she starts their acquisition is end and aims which can be called as mark. Making the mark is the first measure towards our end, from this minute one can put their way towards their end. Target can be divided into three factors. The first factor is one should happen and analyze the ground why he/she set this end. The 2nd component is one had to research their end, which means one must hold a good thought about the end and besides about the life after accomplishing the end. The 3rd factor is one must hold clear cut cognition about the aims which he/she had to finish on the manner to end. Planning has a great importance in acquisition. After puting the end one must fix a class map, in this they had to be after their survey clip, clip for making their assignment, reading articles besides clip for amusement. If there is no amusement a individual can be narrow minded. For all this a good planning must be at that place. Normally fr om my childhood itself I had a good planning about my surveies and this helped me a batch to make my end and that helped me more when I was working in building field. In building field planning has a great value and there we had to be after the work for the coming two or three hebdomads in progress. If one ‘s planning fails company had to endure a batch. After be aftering about the surveies he/she should fall in line with the surveies. During this process one can hesitate on occasion and look into whether they are traveling in right path or non. If he/she is traveling in the incorrect way of their mark they had to recheck their planning and the correct it. I normally follow this manner on my surveies because by this I can cipher how far my mark is and how much distance I had screen on my manner to the mark. The concluding factor is ‘Do it for life ‘ , means after making the end 1 must do some clip to bask what they had achieved. So when 1 is utilizing their cogniti on, so they can reenforce their self-image which will give them a great sense of satisfaction.ISSUES IN A GROUP WORK.While working with an person or a group of people, one ‘s attitudes and behavior alterations which is termed as societal influence. When we are working in a group many jobs can come into drama. It will impact the smooth working of an administration. So when we are get downing a group work we must be cognizant of the issues that can originate in a group and we must be ready to work out the issues. The issues in a group work can be as follows Problems due to hapless planning. Less control on the procedure. No new thoughts or information on treatment. Lack of treatment about the thoughts. Unable to finish the undertaking on clip. Poor engagement by the group members. Frustration between the members in the group. Playing a domination function by a squad member. Being of the mark. Communication job. ( Beginning: – Berk and Lintem et.al ) Planning plays a polar function in a group work while making a undertaking. If one is non holding a proper planning so he/she will non able to run the undertaking swimmingly. When I was working in a mechanical house we gave more importance to planning section because there we are utilizing heavy Cranes for the hard-on of equipment for a high menu and if the planning fails everything is gone. So when we are get downing anything we must be after it really good. Not at all for occupation, when one is making a group assignment during their surveies besides a good planning must be at that place. When one is making a group assignment a individual must be at that place to principal the squad and take the group members in the right way. Otherwise every group members will be in confusion about the proceedings and this may do many jobs. If the group members are holding no new thoughts or information about the work they are making, so they will non be able to finish the undertaking in clip in a good mode. One should be good cognizant about the subject that he/she is making. The of import factor in a group work is the treatment. The squad leader must name a group meeting and discuss about present place of the work, how they can continue, new thoughts etc. If there is no treatment traveling on about the schemes, so the squad members will be executing consequently to their want and later it becomes really hard to finish the undertaking in a good manner. Merely from a balanced treatment new thoughts will be emerged. Time direction is one of the critical factors in a group work. There must be a clip tabular array and the group should supervise it. If there is no prioritized clip agenda for a undertaking and at the last minute the group had to scramble to complete the undertaking and finally fails to run into the outlooks. In some instances some of the group members did non take part in treatment and they will stay quiet and merely hear the treatment merely. As a consequence the other the squad members had to work a batch to counterbalance for this and it effects the smooth operation of the group. Frustration among team members is a rather normal job happening in a group work. In a group, if he/she thinks that their thoughts are non giving any importance or penchant by the other group members and as a consequence they will be acquiring frustrated and because of this a batch of jobs may originate. At the clip of treatment when one or two dominates the session other squad members may believe that their thoughts are non giving any precedence and it may impact the squad outcomes. Being of the undertaking means, after acquiring the undertaking the squad members will non take it earnestly and they waste clip on playing or dish the dirting. At the last minute merely they will be cognizant about the undertaking and fails to complete it before the deadline. This is normally seen in many of the group works. Proper communicating among group members is a really of import factor in a group work. If there is no communicating between the squad members they ca n't bring forth a good end product. This is one of the chief jobs that I had faced when I was working in BPCL, India. How one can get the better of the above sited jobs in a group is discussed below.STRATEGIES FOR SOLVING GROUP PROBLEMS.For work outing the jobs in a group work there are many attacks, it chiefly depends on the jobs nature and the individual who had involved in that job. Usually rational attack is use to work out the jobs. Rational attack means analyse the job, cheque for options, measure every optio n, select one, use it and look into whether the job is rectified or non. Adequate clip must be given to the group members to present themselves such as their name, individuality etc. A brainstorming subdivision should be conducted to develop an thought about the group undertaking. In that subdivision select one individual as a squad leader and make up one's mind the day of the month and clip for the following meeting and start to work on the undertaking. This will assist to finish the undertaking in a better mode. This will assist to rectify the job which causes due to decelerate start and hapless planning. In the brainstorming subdivision every squad members must be at that place and each one had to lend their ain thoughts. After bring forthing the few thoughts evaluate it and seek for farther. If these attacks are non working they can near the coach for counsel. List out the thoughts which are proposed in the treatment and they must be certain that all the thoughts had been tested. Promote the squad members to acquire some violative suggestions sometime s it may assist to make new thoughts. For deciding the jobs related to the clip direction, timelines must be established in which all the group members must hold on that. For every meeting the squad member must come with a advancement study on what they had been making after the last meeting. The squad members must assist each other for the completion of undertaking, for illustration a individual is non able to make his work due to some unwellness or some other ground. One of the other jobs in a group will be deficiency of engagement by members. For this the squad had to found out why he /she is quiet and non active. Make a confab with that individual in the presence of a non-participating member to acknowledge the ground for the absence of engagement and the 1 who had talked must seek to work out it. I had a similar experience when I was working in BPCL, India. We handled the state of affairs in the same mode and the ground for that cat was some household job. Next we can look into out how one can work out the defeat between members. Every member must esteem the thoughts of others and this does n't intend that one had support the other people ‘s thought blindly. They can measure and supply productive remarks about the thought. When 1 had to differ with one ‘s thought do it gracefully and the squad members must bear in head that they had to travel for dialogue and comprise while working in a group. In some group work issues may expect when one or two members dominate in the treatment and to decide this, squad leader must take attention of it. Every squad member must be given opportunity to explain their thoughts. So when a individual is transcending the clip bound one can state courteously that your clip bound is over and allow us now hear what others had had to state and it will be utile for you besides. For work outing the communicating job foremost of all one had find out what are the issues that consequence a group work because of hapless communicating. Then look into out for which undertaking it is chiefly set uping. For illustration, if there is a misinterpretation between the squad members one had to take stairss to work out this by giving a clear thought about the undertaking and clear up their uncertainties.CONCLUSION.No can last in today ‘s universe without larning. I can hopefully state that self-actualization demand in Maslow ‘s Hierarchy of Needs Theory motivated me a batch to take my Masterss in selling. Why I choose Bangor University for my Masterss is that Bangor is keeping a good rank in the top universities rank list in UK and the cost of life is besides really inexpensive when compared with other metropoliss in United Kingdom. My attack to acquisition is about comparable to Larid ‘s Traditional centripetal stimulation theory and the four factors that bear on head while analyzing is mark, program, track advancement and make it for life. Group work will assist an person to hone their capablenesss. I had sited many jobs in a group work in this essay on which some of them are from my personal experience besides. Conflicts in a group can be of many grounds and the important facet is how a individual can cover the struggle and how to decide it.

Learning by Yourself or with a Teacher: What’s Better?

Some people think that it is always better to have a teacher while others believe that they can learn better by themselves. In my opinion, the best way of learning is always with a teacher. There are lots of reasons for that but I would like to focus on three of them which I consider most important. First of all, teachers can give me reasonable explanations when I do not understand subject matters. It is always better to have a teacher, whom I can depend on, to solve the problem or to dispel my confusion. Otherwise, I would learn the subject by heart without comprehending its real meaning. Second, since an educational process is difficult people often make mistakes while exercising or learning. That is way, it is always better to learn with a teacher who will correct my mistakes and focus my attention on the reasons why I make such. In addition, dealing with students and assisting them gain higher levels of knowledge make teachers into people with a great deal of experience and erudition. I think that they can help me not only manage with difficulties but they can also pass on me a bit of their wisdom and knowledge. On the contrary there are those who think that they can learn better by themselves than with a teacher. The reasons might be that they feel sufficient self-confidence or they do not need any outer help while learning and exercising. Besides correcting mistakes and giving different explanations, teachers are valuable sources of advice and help. That is why, I truly believe that it is always better to have a teacher when I climb the ladder of success.

How does adenosine diphosphate (ADP) activate platelets Essay

How does adenosine diphosphate (ADP) activate platelets - Essay Example ADP induces platelet shape change, calcium flux, and inhibition of adenylyl cyclase, leading to aggregation. Kahner et al. (2006) also stated that rapid shape change, release of granular contents, generation of lipid mediators, and aggregation occur during platelet activation. Various surface receptors involved in platelet activation include G protein coupled receptors (GPCRs), integrins and glycoprotein receptors. Adenosine diphosphate (ADP) (released from platelet granules) and thromboxane A2 (generated within platelets) are the secondary mediators that activate other resting platelets, resulting in the amplification of initial physiological haemostatic response. Adenosine nucleotides are released following platelet activation signal through the P2 purinergic receptors on the platelet membrane. The two types of P2 receptors are ligand-gated cation channels (P2X), or GPCRs (P2Y). Till date, seven different P2X receptors (P2X1)) and eight distinct P2Y receptors (P2Y1,2,4,6,11-14) hav e been identified which were cloned from mammalian tissues. P2Y1, P2Y12, andP2X1 subtypes are the P2 purinergic receptors expressed on platelets and their physiologic agonists are ADP, ADP, and adenosine triphosphate (ATP), respectively. These receptors, when activated by the agonists, initiate a complex signaling cascade that ultimately results in platelet activation and thrombus formation. The physiological agonist for the P2Y1 receptor is ADP. This receptor can also be stimulated in vitro by 2MeSADP, ADP, APDaS and ADPbS in the decreasing order of potency and is involved platelet shape change and aggregation brought about by ADP. P2Y12 is coupled to Gi2 protein. Upon stimulation, the Ga and Gbc subunits of the heterotrimeric G protein dissociate and activate various signaling pathways. The Gai2 is found to be responsible for ADP-mediated inhibition of adenylyl cyclase and subsequent reduction in cytosolic cAMP concentrations. This is one

Impact of DNA damage induced by anticancer drugs on both S phase and Essay

Impact of DNA damage induced by anticancer drugs on both S phase and mitosis phase of the cell cycle - Essay Example 2005). Cells in any living organism grow, divide, perform their functions and gradually enter apoptosis (programmed cell death) at the end of their life cycle. This process is progressed through a ‘cell cycle’ which mainly consist of four stages as G1 (gap 1), S (synthesis), G2 (gap 2) and M (mitosis). Cell cycle regulation and cancer are intersected fields and hence treating cancer is more or less done in targeting the cell cycle (Collins et al. 1997). During G1, the cells grow in size and prepare for chromosome replication by synthesizing enzymes for the next stage. In S phase, the genomic DNA chromosomes are duplicated to produce two identical chromosomes (replication) and the G2 phase prepares the cells for cell division and synthesis cellular components required for mitosis in the proceeding stage. In the M phase, the replicated chromosomes are divided through a series of processes as Prophase, Prometaphase, Metaphase, Anaphase and Telophase. Subsequently the cell s plits into two identical daughter cells with cytokinensis (Lewin 1990). These cells then enter G0 (resting) stage where they carry on their respective functions or in actively dividing tissues, they once again enter G1 stage to be further divided. Each cell cycle has check points as G1/S and G2/M that is involved in correction mechanisms to prevent any error in this system. Transition through check points are signaled by cyclones and cycline-dependent kinases (CDKs). ATM (Ataxia Telangiectasia Mutated) and ATR (Ataxia Telangiectasia and Rad-3-related) protein kinases are the leading controllers in DNA damage checkpoint signaling (Nishida et el. 2009). This mechanism ensures any error during DNA synthesis mechanism does not pass through the cell cycle. Cells with any mistake are either repaired before progressing or enter into apoptosis (programmed cell death) if the errors cannot be rectified. The G1/S check point ensures the cells have grown into the appropriate size and the DNA is not damaged while in the G2/M check point it is confirmed that the DNA is properly replicated during the S phase. Another check point in the M stage (metaphase check point), see that the chromosomes are properly aligned on the spindle at metaphase. Any mistake detected in any of these check points force the cells to repair or enter apoptosis. Chemotherapy is an efficient and a widely used method of treating cancer. Here the cancerous cells are treated with anticancer/antineoplastic drugs and apoptosis is induced (Muller et al. 1999). Usually a combination of two or more drugs is administered to the patient to increase efficiency. Chemotherapeutic treatments are targeted to destroy actively proliferating cells since cancerous cells are highly proliferating. This has the disadvantage of attacking rapidly dividing normal cells such as in the bone marrow, intestine and hair follicles and cause chemotherapy side effects as hair loss (alopecia) and inflammation in the digestive tract (mu cositis) since the anticancer drugs fails to identify cancerous and normal cells but simply destroys the fast proliferating cells. Chemotherapeutic agents or anticancer drugs are mainly aimed toward cell cycle at

Real estate Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

Real estate - Essay Example The real estate firms should put in place measures to ease the effects of inflation on their firms to ensure smooth operations. These approaches could either be internal or external to the firm concerned (Ball, 2008, p. 126). Through use of fractions, firms are able to compare their own operations in relation to set objectives and assess the extent to which they were able to accomplish the set goals. Also, they will be able to assess their performance in relation to other players in the same industry and devise means to boost their performances (DTZ Holdings Plc, 2010, P.25). Just like the other trading activities, real estate businesses are influenced by the prevailing market forces (Sunday Mirror, 2011). The real estate must implement tactical decisions to ensure their survival during financial meltdown. Inflation has profound consequences on both businesses and individual consumers. Due to decline in purchasing power, the consumers tend to buy less of product and services with the same amount of money than what they could purchase before the occurrence of recession (DTZ Holdings Plc, 2010, P.46). This is caused by the fact that recession result to increase in prices of the basic consumer commodities which is similar to decline in consumers’ income. Therefore, consumers are required to spend more funds to acquire similar amount of goods and services they used to enjoy before the occurrence of recession. Recession also results to decline in saving ability of the consumers (DTZ Holdings Plc, 2010, P.46). As the prices of commodities and other facilities like housing goes high, the consumers have to allocate greater proportion of their earnings to the basic commodities like food, education and healthcare hence leaving small or no funds at all for savings. Both individuals and the organizations have to devise other means such as innovations to create

Community Health Promotion Tool Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Community Health Promotion Tool - Assignment Example There are populations that are at risk of getting the heart disease quickly which are male with a history of the heart disease in their family as well as increase in age. Older people are at high risk of getting the disease than the younger population (Topol and Califf, 2007). The population being targeted by this summary research is the African American male over the age of 65 years as they are the ones whose death statistics from the coronary heart diseases has been on the increase in the last decade. This population is at risk because of their gender, their race, and lack of physical activities, unhealthy eating habits, their high blood pressure and above all their high increase in diabetes (Topol and Califf, 2007). The African American male at this age of over 65 years believe themselves to be invincible to any health problems and they therefore engage in reckless eating habits. They already have their families and hence are not looking out to improve their appearance or impress the females by going to the gym and exercising as is the norm with the younger generation. This population at this age has children who are in their mid-twenties and thirties and most of them are not turning out the way they are supposed to. For elderly male whose children have retorted to crime and prostitution and others who have neglected their parental duties, their high blood pressure seems to be on the increase ever. With the increased high blood pressure combined with diabetes from the bad healthy choices combine with reckless eating habits and lack of exercise, these population develops the coronary heart disease faster than any other population group and it kills them faster as well. Their cultural beliefs do not pay special attention to seeking constant medical attention as prevention techniques or carrying out regular medical

Cosmetic Industry background Analysis in China Marcket Assignment

Cosmetic Industry background Analysis in China Marcket - Assignment Example Due to this, many cosmetics manufacturers have introduced more products in the expanding cosmetic market such as flavored glosses and lipstick, cosmetic packaged in sparkly and glittery packaging, and advertising and marketing using young beautiful models. However, cosmetics market in China is doing well in the manufacturing and packaging of beauty products. For instance, the raw materials of making shampoos are best provided in China by various manufacturers such as: Wuxi Nuoya Machinery Co., Ltd., Yangzhou Chenhua Science &Technology Group Co., Ltd., Shanghai Xiaoxiang Chemical Co., Ltd., and Shandong Freda Biotechnology Co., Ltd., among others (Yang, 2004, p. 123). Cosmetic industry is dominated by a number of multinational corporations. However, sale and distribution is spread over a wide range of businesses in China. Historically, the people of China initially stained their fingernails using gelatin, gum Arabic, egg, and beeswax. The used color represented a particular social cl ass (Tao, 2005, p. 231). For instance, the royals wore silver and gold, and red or black. The lower social classes were forbidden from wearing bright colors. Cosmetics market in China and the world today make a lot of money due to the furious rate of growth of the anti aging industry and the factor of celebrity in marketing and advertising (Tang, 2008). Today in the whole world, beauty is characterized with the youths and many are obsessed with their falling jowls and wrinkles and lines appearing. This is even turning people to undertake cosmetic surgery. This is what has taken my interest in writing this research paper, which will focus on the cosmetic market in China including: wholesalers, manufacturers and retailers; Chinese cosmetic suppliers including raw materials and packaging suppliers (Sunfaith China Ltd., 2005, p. 200). Cosmetic market in China Cosmetic market and industry in China has evolved to a fully fledged market with the emergence of flouring brands (Tang, 2000, p. 311). Within the cosmetic market in China, among the 300 brands, 20 of the brands have a joint venture and leading position of 80% of the share of the market. The cosmetic manufacturers in China are generally located in the inland cities and the Eastern Coastal line (Shen, Liu & Huang, 2005, p. 19). The market produces 90% with sales rated above 60% within the country. With respect to the types of cosmetics in Chinese markets, products of skin care is first in the list with 35% share, products of hair care sharing 28%, and products of make up taking up 29% share, and others are perfumes. According to the cosmetic insiders, the total sales of the cosmetics will probably reach to RMB 80 billion and amount to 12.9% per annum. The wholesalers, manufacturers and retailers are making huge profits in the cosmetic market in China due to the mentioned estimates of sales (Schutte & Ciarlante, 1998, p. 78). China has also emerged the eighth best cosmetic market in the world and second best in Asia. The stiff competition in the cosmetic sector has pushed the industry of cosmetics to combine the cosmetic market, industrialization and internationalization (Pitman, 2005, p. 12). Back in 2005, the scale of market even reached RMB 46 billion, with the cosmetic retail sector reaching RMB 33.05 billion which was much above the expected limit of growth 19.1% (Li, 2005, p. 32). the cosmetic market in China is currently exhibiting the following characters: the cosmetic mark
